FMU squads to help fight Breast Cancer with Passionately Pink for the Cure soccer match and Dig Pink volleyball match
Two Francis Marion University athletic teams will do their part to help defeat and promote awareness of breast cancer with home matches this week.
The Francis Marion men's soccer team will host Barton College on Tuesday (Oct. 14) at 4 p.m. for the squad's third Passionately Pink for the CureTM match.
The Patriot women's volleyball team will entertain USC Aiken on Thursday (Oct. 16) at 7 p.m. as FMU participates in the Dig Pink program.
Admission to both matches is free, and fans are encouraged to wear pink. Both events are being held in conjunction with the observance of October as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
The Patriot soccer team (5-4-3) is in the midst of a record-setting defensive streak. FMU is unbeaten in its last six matches while setting a school record for consecutive shutouts (5) and consecutive minutes holding its opponents scoreless (500:15). Barton is 1-11-0.
The Passionately Pink for the CureTM program has been organized by the Susan G. Komen for the Cure group. Donations will be taken during the match with all contributions going to Komen for the Cure. FMU's Zeta Tau Alpha sorority has again joined in on this effort and will have a table set up at the soccer field with educational information regarding breast cancer awareness and education. McLeod Regional Medical Center is also assisting in the event.
The Patriot volleyball team will join hundreds of teams from around the country when they participate in the "Dig Pink" National Breast Cancer Awareness Rally. The team hopes to raise funds to help eradicate breast cancer, with proceeds going to the Side-Out Foundation, a national 501(c)(3) organization located in the Washington D.C. area. The FMU squad is currently 16-5 overall and 2-1 in the Peach
Belt Conference, while USCA is 13-6 and 2-1.
