FMU Golfers place 14th at season-opening Springhill Suites Intercollegiate
FLORENCE, SC – On Tuesday (Sept. 14), the Francis Marion University men's golf team finished 14th at the season-opening Springhill Suites Intercollegiate Tournament, hosted by the Patriots at the Country Club of South Carolina. Georgia College & State University led wire-to-wire en route to an 18-stroke victory in the team standings.
The 26th-annual tournament was played on CCSC's par 72, 7,062-yard course.

GCSU registered a final-round two-under-par 286 team score to finish the 54-hole event at 16-under-par 848. The 18-stroke win was the third-largest in tournament history and the widest since then USC Coastal Carolina College won by 22 strokes in 1990.
Chattanooga finished second at 866, followed by Furman University (870), Jacksonville State University (871), and Samford University (874) and two-time defending tournament champion Georgia Southern University (874).
Like the Bobcats in the team standings, Chattanooga redshirt freshman Chris Robb led from start to finish. He fired a final-round 72 to finish at nine-under 207 and edged Billy Shida of GCSU by one stroke. Patrick Garrett of GCSU placed third at six-under 210.
Shida and Jacobo Pastor of Charleston Southern University carded the low individual rounds on Tuesday, at two-under-par 70.
Francis Marion compiled a final-round 301 score to finish at 894. Sophomore Sebastian Backlund was the top Patriot finisher as he tied for 29th place at 75-70-75=220. His final round included an eagle. Junior Kurt Slattery also shot a 75 on Tuesday to tie for 40th position (77-72-75=224), while sophomore Kenneth Svanum tied for 44th (76-74-75=225), freshman Sean Morrison tied for 56th (74-78-76=228), and sophomore Travis Gantt tied for 74th (74-80-82=236).
FMU junior Andrew Weir (82-77-76=235) and freshman Fredrik Sporck (81-76-80=237) both competed as individuals and placed 73rd and 76th respectively.
Francis Marion will compete in the University of Maryland Intercollegiate Tournament, Saturday and Sunday in Cambridge, Md.
