Gaynor announces additions to FMU golf team
Francis Marion University golf coach Mark Gaynor has announced the addition of five players to his program for the 2009-2010 season: junior Andrew Weir of Montrose, Scotland, sophomore Ciaren McKenna of Mallow, Ireland, and freshmen Michael Asay of Lexington, Ky., Sebastian Backlund of Bollebygd, Sweden, and Kenneth Svanum of Skoppum, Norway.

USC Aiken, the top-ranked team in NCAA Division II, fired a final-round 306 team score to complete a wire-to-wire win at the fourth-annual Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate Mens Golf Tournament, held on Hilton Head Island, S.C., while host Francis Marion University finished third.

The Francis Marion University golf team will play host to the fourth-annual Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate Tournament, Monday and Tuesday (Feb. 23-24), on Hilton Head Island. The tournament will consist of 36 holes on Monday and 18 holes on Tuesday. Both days will begin with shotgun starts at 8:30 a.m.

Patriot golfers garner Top-3 finish in Rhode Island
Senior Peter McGibney fired a 4-under-par 68 to lead Francis Marion University to a third-place finish at the Adams Cup of Newport golf tournament, hosted by the University of Rhode Island. FMU carded a final-round 294 team score on Tuesday, second-best among the 16-team field, to move the Patriots up two positions in the final team standings.

Georgia Southern University, paced by a balanced attack that saw three golfers finish in the Top 10, coasted to a 13-stroke victory at the 24th-annual Raines Development Group Intercollegiate mens golf tournament, Tuesday (Sept. 16) in Florence. Host Francis Marion University moved up one position over the final 18 holes to finish fourth.

The Francis Marion University golf team, playing its first event of the season and its first competition since last weeks tragic death of junior golfer Jonathan Lavin, rallied over the final two rounds on Tuesday (Sept. 9) to finish 11th at the Aldila Scenic City Invitational Tournament, hosted by the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga and Middle Tennessee State University at the Council Fire Golf Club.

Francis Marion University junior golfer Jonathan Lavin was tragically killed in a traffic accident, Wednesday evening (Sept. 3) in Florence. Lavin, 21, was a native of Askim, Sweden.

Gloverville golfer to join Francis Marion squad
Francis Marion University golf coach Mark Gaynor has announced the addition of Matt Jackson of Gloverville, S.C., to the Patriot program. Jackson will have two years of eligibility beginning this fall after transferring from Spartanburg Methodist College.
