Patriot golfers place sixth at WCU Hummingbirg Intercollegiate


SAPPHIRE, NC - Paced by senior Andrew Pitcher's final-round 68, Francis Marion University moved up two positions to finish tied for sixth at the Hummingbird Intercollegiate Tournament, hosted by Western Carolina University.

The University of Central Florida earned the team title by edging Vanderbilt University by one stroke.  The University of Akron was third, followed by Elon University, Western Carolina, and FMU and Gardner-Webb University tied for sixth.  The field included 14 teams.

Francis Marion was tied for eighth position after the opening round of the 36-hole event.

The Patriots conclude their fall schedule with a 48-23-1 record, including three Top-5 finishes in five tournaments.

Pitcher finished tied for 25th place at 78-68=146, while senior Keith Crowley tied for 31st place one stroke back (72-75=147).  FMU junior Matt Jackson tied for 40th (75-74=149), while junior Christopher Couch tied for 49th (74-76=150) and senior Peter McGibney tied for 52nd position (79-72=151).

Francis Marion will return to action, Feb. 23-24 on Hilton Head Island, when the Patriots host the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate Tournament.
