Clayton State defeats FMU Men 84-70

MORROW, GA – Clayton State University opened the game with a 23-8 spurt and never trailed after the opening minute en route to an 84-70 win over Francis Marion University, Saturday afternoon (Feb. 3) in Peach Belt Conference men's basketball action.

The Patriots drop to 13-7 overall and 8-7 in the PBC and remain in a tie for fourth place.  FMU will play at Lander University on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.  The next home game for the Patriots will be Homecoming on Feb. 10 at 3:30 p.m. against the University of North Georgia.

Senior guard Detrek Browning led FMU with 28 points and three steals.  He connected on 7-of-13 shots, including 4-of-8 three-point attempts, and was 10-of-11 at the foul line. He has scored at least 27 points in each of the past six games.

FMU junior swingman Brandon Parker added 11 points and a team-high eight rebounds.

Guard Nathan Powell and forward Jaylen Taylor each scored 19 points to lead Clayton State (14-5, 12-3), while guard Justin Tuckson tallied 18 points.  Taylor also hauled down a game-high 13 rebounds.

The Patriots took a 1-0 lead on a free throw by senior center Judah Alexander in the opening minute.  With the score knotted at 3-3, the Lakers used an 8-0 spurt to take the lead for good.  The margin would grow to 15 at 23-8 only nine minutes into the contest.  FMU would trim the deficit to six points on four occasions, but Clayton State owned a 39-31 advantage at intermission.

Two free throws by Browning 13 seconds into the second stanza again cut the margin to six (39-33), but the Lakers responded with nine straight points to forge a 48-33 lead.

A lay-in by junior Ryan Davis brought FMU to within 68-57 with 5:30 left, but CSU answered with a 7-0 run to seal the outcome.

FMU shot 43.6 percent from the field, was 6-of-17 from behind the three-point arc, and hit 16-of-24 free throw attempts.  The Lakers connected on 44.1 percent, was 6-of-19 from long range, and made 18-of-23 shots at the foul line.
