FMU captures 74-63 road win behind 31 points from Browning

MILLEDGEVILLE, GA – Senior guard Detrek Browning scored 31 points and Francis Marion University shot 61.9 percent over the final 20 minutes to pull away for a 74-63 road win over Georgia College, Saturday evening (Jan. 27) in Peach Belt Conference men's basketball action.

The Patriots improve to 12-6 overall and 7-6 in the PBC, moving the Patriots into a tie for fourth place with USC Aiken.  FMU will host the Pacers on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

Browning connected on 9-of-12 field goal attempts and was 11-of-12 at the foul line en route to his fourth 30-point contest of the season and in the process pushed his school-record career point total to 2,071. The Columbia native also handed out a team-high four assists and registered three steals.

Senior center Judah Alexander followed Browning with 12 points, while senior Warren Specht chipped in eight points.

Jordan Thomas led Georgia College (9-10, 5-8) with 21 points, while Kohl Roberts tallied 14 points and eight rebounds.

Francis Marion trailed 18-16 with 6:40 left before halftime.  A free throw by junior Brandon Parker and a jumper by junior Victory Hunt gave FMU the lead for good at 19-18.  Those points started a 12-3 run to end the half for the Patriots that resulted in a 28-21 lead at intermission.

FMU would not trail in the second half, although it took a while to shake the Bobcats. The Patriots led 48-44 with 10:17 remaining before a 12-2 spurt pushed the advantage to double figures. Browning contributed seven points to the run.

Francis Marion's largest lead came at 69-50 following a three-pointer by Specht from the left elbow with 4:03 left.  FMU made 13-of-21 field goal attempts in the second half.

For the game, Francis Marion connected on 51 percent of its field goal attempts and hit 20-of-31 free throws. The Patriot defense held Georgia College to 41.7 percent shooting, including only 5-of-20 three-point attempts.  The Bobcats were 18-of-25 at the charity stripe.   

FMU forced 23 Bobcat turnovers which were converted into 22 points.
