Patriots fall in tight 75-70 contest to Flagler

FLORENCE, SC – Flagler College junior guard Vaughn McCall recorded 30 points on 9-of-17 shooting, including six three pointers, to push the Saints past Francis Marion University, Saturday afternoon (Jan. 20) in Peach Belt Conference men's basketball action.

The Patriots drop to 10-6 overall and 5-6 in PBC competition, while the Saints improve to 7-8 and 4-7. FMU will host the Braves of UNC Pembroke, Wednesday evening at 7:30 p.m. in the Smith University Center.

Senior Detrek Browning led Francis Marion with 27 points (10-of-23) and six rebounds, followed by junior forward Brandon Parker with 11 points. Browning add to his list of career records on Saturday, tying the mark for three-pointers made (249) and setting a new mark for minutes played.

Along with McCall, senior Austin Howard accounted for 14 points, while 6-6 junior forward Jeffercy Jean had 10.

In a first half that saw 10 ties and seven lead changes, the Patriots jumped out to a quick 6-0 advantage at the 18:29 mark. The Saints would take their first lead of the game (14-13) with 12:21 remaining in the first half. Neither squad would see a lead larger than four points for the rest of the stanza. The score was tied at 39-39 heading into the intermission, with McCall tallying 13 points and Browning 11 points.

The second stanza had much of the same as the first. Lead change after lead change, Flagler would eventually go ahead by six points three separate times, the last coming with 3:55 remaining and a score of 66-60. The Patriots would eventually take a 70-68 lead at the 1:27 mark, but the Saints would score the final seven points of the game.

Flagler missed only two free-throws (16-of-18) for 88.9 percent, and shot 41.7 percent from the field. Francis Marion shot 13-of-16 from the free-throw stripe (81.3 percent), while shooting 27-of-66 (40.9 percent) from field goal range. FC outrebounded the Patriots 45-33, while FMU outscored the Saints in the paint 42-26, and led in points-off-turnovers 19-11.
