Alexander has big afternoon in hard-fought game at Columbus State

COLUMBUS, GA - Francis Marion University senior center Judah Alexander recorded 18 points and nine rebounds, but Columbus State University took a come-from-behind 76-66 victory, Monday afternoon (Jan. 15) in Peach Belt Conference men's basketball action.

The Patriots drop to 9-5 overall and 4-5 in PBC competition, while the Cougars improve to 4-8 and 4-5.

Francis Marion will travel to Augusta University on Wednesday with the tip-off set for 7:30 p.m. to end the Patriots' three-game road trip. The next home contest for FMU will be on Saturday against Flagler University starting at 3:30 p.m. in the Smith University Center.

Along with Alexander, senior Detrek Browning led all scorers with 23 points (18 points coming in the second half), while juniors Brandon Parker and Ryan Davis both tallied nine points.

Junior Rudy Winters led the Cougars with 18 points, while senior forward Markus Dixon added a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds.

In a tightly contested first half that saw the Patriots holding onto the lead for most of the stanza, Columbus State came back to tie the game at 31-31 with a 5-0 run. The Patriots regained the lead at halftime 33-31 thanks to a jump shot in the paint by Alexander 30 seconds before the horn.

The second stanza saw seven lead changes. FMU trailed 55-50 midway through the second half, but rallied with an 11-3 spurt to take a 61-58 lead at the 6:50 mark, Browning contributed seven points to the run. CSU responded with a game-deciding 7-0 spurt and never trailed again.

Browning hit two free throws to bring the Patriots within 67-65 with two minutes remaining, but Columbus State closed the game with a 9-1 run.

Francis Marion connected on 39 percent of its field goal attempts, was 6-of-21 from behind the three-point arc, and hit 14-of-18 free throws, while CSU shot 46.4 percent from the floor, including 6-of-19 three-pointers, and made 18-of-28 charity tosses.
