Patriots fall to Georgia Southwestern 93-71

AMERICUS, GA – Georgia Southwestern State University shot an impressive 55.9 percent from the field as the Hurricanes take the victory over Francis Marion University 93-71 Saturday afternoon (Jan. 13) in Peach Belt Conference men's basketball action.

FMU falls to 9-4 overall and 4-4 in the conference. The Patriots will be back in action on Monday at 3:30 p.m. against Columbus State University. The next home event for the men's squad will be on Jan. 20 at 1:30 p.m., as Flagler University will travel to the Smith University Center.

Senior guard Detrek Browning led Francis Marion with 20 points, while junior Brandon Parker recorded 16 points. Warren Specht added nine points and seven rebounds.

GSW (9-3, 5-3) junior guard Quenten Taylor led the contest with 25 points, while forward Andre Statam ended the game with 23 points. 6-6 senior forward added a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds.

After FMU tied the game at 4-4 in the early stages of the first half, the Hurricanes went on an 11-3 run to take a 15-7 lead at the 10:53 mark. Later in the half, GSW went on another 11-0 spurt, making the score 29-12 with 5:45 until intermission. The Hurricanes would not let a double-digit lead slip in the second stanza.

Georgia Southwestern went 86.4 percent (19-of-22) from the free throw stripe, while the Patriots were 9-of-14.
