Browning earns PBC Player of the Week award

AUGUSTA, GA - After achieving several personal milestones and leading his team to an 8-0 start, Francis Marion University senior guard Detrek Browning has been named the Peach Belt Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week for Dec. 11-19.

A native of Columbia and a product of Irmo High School, Browning averaged 24.3 points, 4.3 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 1.7 steals per game in three FMU wins last week.  The team's 8-0 start equals the second-best start in program history, and the Patriots are one of only 10 unbeaten squads left in NCAA Division II.  Francis Marion also shares the early conference lead with a 3-0 PBC record.

Browning connected on 61.4 percent of his field goal attempts, including a sizzling 11-of-21 from three-point range, and was 8-of-10 at the foul line. He tallied 18 of his 22 points in the second half of a come-from-behind 91-75 road win at the University of Mount Olive last Thursday. On Sunday, the 6-0 guard scored 24 points and moved into second place on the Patriot career scoring list in an 87-67 win over Georgia Southwestern State University, while also tying the FMU single-game record for three-point shooting percentage, going 5-of-5. Then on Tuesday, he scored 25 of his game-high 27 points in the second half of a 90-81 win over Columbus State University.

Almost more impressively, despite averaging 37 minutes per game in the three contests, he committed only one turnover last week.

With 1,817 career points, he is only 47 points shy of setting a new Patriot career scoring mark, and is now sixth on the PBC all-time list.

Browning leads the PBC in scoring (24.8 ppg) and is sixth in field goal percentage (55.2%) and eighth in three-point percentage (45.2%).  It is the second time this season he has won the weekly award and the fourth time in his career.

He is a two-time All-Conference selection and was the PBC Freshman of the Year in 2014-15.

Francis Marion enters the Division II holiday break and will return to action on Dec. 30 with a conference road game at Young Harris College.  The next home game for the Patriots will be Saturday, Jan. 6, at 3:30 p.m. against Clayton State University.
