Patriots overtake Bears in second-half  to open 2-0

PEMBROKE, NC – Senior guard Detrek Browning scored 29 points and senior Warren Specht added 13, all in the final 16 minutes, as Francis Marion University rallied for a 78-70 victory over Lenoir-Rhyne University, Saturday evening (Nov. 11) on the second day of the PBC/SAC Challenge hosted by UNC Pembroke.

FMU starts the season on a two-game winning streak, while Lenoir-Rhyne falls to 0-2. The Patriots will look for their first 3-0 start in seven seasons when they host Johnson and Wales University on Thursday for their home-opener with the tip-off set for 6 p.m.

Browning played all 40 minutes and shot 10-of-17 from the field, including 6-of-9 from three-point range. He continued his climb up various FMU career charts, moving into 22nd place on the rebounding list at 432 and tying with Patrick Callaway for second in career steals at 188.  He is already fourth in career points with 1,678 and third in assists with 332.

Specht tallied his points on 4-of-6 shooting.  Senior Judah Alexander chipped in 10 points and seven rebounds. In the process, Alexander moved pass former Patriot great Evrik Gary for 16th position on the career rebounding list with 509.

As a team, FMU shot 47.5 percent from the floor, including 9-of-20 from beyond the arc, and shot 81.3 percent (13-of-16) from the free-throw line.

Senior Reed Lucas led the Bears with 14 points, while junior Bertrand Awana had 13 points and eight rebounds.

Francis Marion trailed by as many as 10 points in the first half (18-8), but the Patriots put together a 15-5 run to tie the game at 23-23 with 4:49 remaining before halftime. The Bears would end the half on a 10-7 spurt to lead 33-30.

The Patriots came out of halftime with a strong start, outscoring the Bears 25-13 over the first 8:24 to take a 55-46 lead. During that stretch, an 8-1 spurt snapped a 42-42 deadlock and put FMU ahead for good.

The margin would swell to 62-48 after a lay-in by junior Ryan Davis at the 8:22 mark.
