Browning and Specht pace Patriots past Braves 96-92

FLORENCE, SC – Juniors Detrek Browning and Warren Specht combined for 46 points, including 16 by Browning over the final 9:05 of the game, to push Francis Marion University to a fast-paced 96-92 victory over local-rival UNC Pembroke, Monday night (Jan. 30) in Peach Belt Conference men's basketball action.

Francis Marion improves to 8-12 overall and 4-8 in the Peach Belt, good for a tie for fifth-place with Armstrong State University in the East Division.  The Patriots will host the Pirates on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in the second contest of the three-game home stand.

Browning led FMU with 24 points and in the process moved past former Patriot greats Franklin Bellamy and Will Tucker and into ninth-place on the program's career scoring list with 1,466.  He stands only three points shy of Robert Barber's eighth-place total of 1,469.

A native of Columbia, Browning also tallied nine assists and seven rebounds, while committing only two turnovers in 39 minutes of action.  He also stands fifth in career steals (172) and seven in career assists (285).

Specht came off the Patriot bench to have a nearly perfect night.  He was 8-of-9 from the field, including 2-of-2 from three-point range, and hit all four of his free throws to account for a career-high 22 points.

Senior 6-8 center Kenneth Jackson added 18 points on 8-of-10 shooting, while junior forward Judah Alexander registered his fifth double-double of the year with 11 points and 12 rebounds and sophomore swingman Brandon Parker chipped in 11 points and seven rebounds.

Freshman 6-7 forward Akia Pruitt led the Braves with 24 points and 11 rebounds, while reserve forward James Murray-Boyles scored 17 points.

Francis Marion led 56-41 at halftime and never trailed in the second half.  The Patriots led by double figures for much of the second stanza, but UNCP did pull to within 91-87 after a free throw by Pruitt with 1:02 remaining.  However, Specht registered a key steal and connected on four free throws all in the final 27 seconds and Browning iced the game with a free throw at the :07 mark.

FMU shot 55.3 percent in the opening half and committed only two turnovers en route to the big halftime advantage.

The Patriots used a 9-0 run to erase a 27-25 UNCP lead with 8:50 left before intermission.  After a bucket by UNCP's Alex Bradley ended the run, Francis Marion answered with a second 9-0 spurt to take a 43-29 lead.  FMU would go onto score 31 points during the final 8:22 of the half.

For the game, FMU shot 45.8 percent, hit 7-of-20 three-point attempts, and was 23-of-29 at the free throw stripe.  UNCP finished at 46.5 percent from the floor, was 10-of-22 from behind the arc, and hit 16-of-27 free throws.
