Patriots suffer tough 8-4 loss to Braves

FLORENCE, SC – A three-run homer by left fielder Luke Jackson with one out in the top of the eighth inning rallied UNC Pembroke to an 8-4 win over Francis Marion University, Friday night (April 6) in Peach Belt Conference baseball action.

Game two of the series was set for Saturday afternoon, but has been postponed due to the threat of precipitation.  Francis Marion (13-24, 5-17) and UNC Pembroke (25-9, 9-9) will now conclude their three-game series with a doubleheader on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Admission to Cormell Field at Sparrow Stadium is $8 for adults and $5 for students.

Six different Patriots registered base hits on Friday, including an RBI double by junior Steven Cox and an RBI triple from junior outfielder Cole Hinnant.  Junior outfielder Gage Taylor went 0-4 and saw his 20-game hitting streak end.  It is the fifth longest streak in program history.

FMU sophomore reliever Christian Umphlett (3-4) suffered the loss, while UNCP senior right-hander Anthony Burke (5-2) earned the win with a complete-game effort.  Burke allowed the six hits with all four of the Patriot runs being unearned.  He also struck out five batters and walked only one.

FMU took a 1-0 advantage in the bottom of the third on an RBI groundout by junior shortstop CJ Mackinson.  The Braves quickly knotted the score on a solo homer to right centerfield by third baseman Trey Jacobs leading off the fourth.

UNCP claimed a 2-1 lead on Trevor Clemons' RBI single through the left side with one out in the fifth.

A fielding error by the Braves with one out in the bottom of the sixth helped lead to a three-run rally for Francis Marion. Hinnant followed with his run-scoring triple to the right centerfield wall, and then he came home on a sacrifice fly by junior third baseman Alex Griffith.  Following a single by senior designated hitter Tee DuBose, Cox lined his RBI-double just inside the third base bag lifting FMU to a 4-2 lead.

A walk and a hit batter in the top of the eighth set the table for Jackson's game-winning blast over the left field wall.  The Braves added three insurance runs in the top of the ninth.

Four different UNCP players – Jacobs, Jackson, Clemons, and center fielder Roberto Rivera – all had two hits.

FMU starter Evan Flynn lasted seven innings, allowing four runs on five hits with five strikeouts.
