Patriots club Warriors 13-5 in season opener

FLORENCE, SC – Sophomore right-hander Sam High Pitched six effective innings and Francis Marion University pounded out 17 hits en route to a 13-5 victory over Southern Wesleyan University, Friday afternoon (Feb. 2) in non-conference college baseball action.

Francis Marion (1-0) will host a pair of games on Saturday at Sparrow Stadium: Barton College at 2 p.m. and Lenoir-Rhyne University at 5 p.m.  The second game was originally scheduled for Sunday, but moved up a day because of rain forecasted for Sunday.

Senior designated hitter Tee DuBose led the Patriots with three hits, including a pair of doubles, and three runs batted in.  Five other Patriots rapped out two hits apiece: senior center fielder Brooks Kennedy, junior first baseman Steven Cox, junior right fielder Cole Hinnant, junior third baseman Alex Griffith, and junior second baseman Brody Thomasson.

The bottom three batters in the FMU lineup went 7-for-13 and drove in four runs.  FMU leadoff batter Gage Taylor also drove in three runs with a two-run double and a bases-loaded walk.

High (1-0) allowed only three hits and two runs in his six frames, while fanning six and issuing only one free pass.  FMU relievers Austin Griffie (2) and Will Taks (1) tossed the final three frames.

Shortstop John Garrett led Southern Wesleyan (1-1) with a pair of hits.  Righty starter Josh Core (0-1) took the loss as he surrendered six runs in three innings.

FMU scored in each of the first seven innings to build a 13-3 advantage.

The Patriots took a 1-0 lead in the opening frame when Taylor reached on a fielding error and scored on an RBI-double off the top of the left centerfield wall by Cox.  FMU plated two in the second on Taylor's two-run double to left center.

Francis Marion scored three times in the third to go up 6-0. Senior catcher William Robbins drilled a solo home run over the left field wall and DuBose doubled to left center to plate two runs.

After SWU plated a pair of runs in the top of the fourth, the Patriots answered with a tally on a wild pitch and another on an RBI-single through the right side by junior shortstop CJ Mackinson.

The Patriots pushed across single runs in the fifth (sacrifice fly by Hinnant) and sixth (RBI walk by Taylor) frames to lead 10-2.

A sac fly by Kennedy, an RBI double by DuBose, and a fielding error by the Warriors accounted for the final three FMU runs in the seventh.

FMU has won 20 of 21 all-time meetings with the Warriors.
