Hinnant hinders Hawks in 6-1 Patriot win

MURFREESBORO, NC – Sophomore Cole Hinnant banged out three hits, scored once and drove in one run, while also pitching a scoreless inning to help Francis Marion University claim a 6-1 non-conference win over Chowan University, Wednesday afternoon (March 29) in collegiate baseball action.

Francis Marion improves to 22-11, while the Hawks fall to 12-19.  FMU completes a three-game sweep of Chowan this season.  The Patriots will return to Florence and entertain Armstrong State University this coming weekend with a single game on Saturday at 5 p.m. and a doubleheader on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Hinnant doubled with one out in the top of the first and scored on a run-scoring single by junior left fielder William Robbins.  Robbins later came around to touch home on Brooks Kennedy's RBI-single through the right side.

Kennedy was one of four Patriots with two hits, joining freshman center fielder Connor Howell, senior catcher Zack Haralambis, and junior first baseman Trey Chapman.

The FMU advantage increased to 3-0 on junior designated hitter Reese Cooley's RBI-single through the left side in the fourth frame.  Cooley has safely reached base in each of his last 15 contests.  The Hawks scored their lone run in the bottom of the fifth on Marvin Harrell's RBI ground out.

Francis Marion added insurance tallies in the sixth, eighth, and ninth innings.  Senior second baseman Antonio Pino tripled to lead off the sixth and scored on a wild pitch.  Hinnant plated Chapman with a double to right center in the eighth, and Kennedy accounted for the final run with a sacrifice fly.

Six Patriot hurlers combined to limit Chowan to eight hits, while fanning six and issuing no walks.  Freshman starter Garrett Wilson (5-2) was credited with the win as FMU head coach Art Inabinet had a pre-determined pitching sequence for the mid-week contest.

Chowan starter Will Edwards (0-5) took the loss as he surrendered three runs on 10 hits in four innings of work.  Hawks' designated hitter Kyle Cross registered a pair of hits, including a double.
