White’s walk-off hit rallies FMU to 2-1 PBC win

FLORENCE, SC – Freshman third baseman Harris White stroked a two-out, run-scoring single into right centerfield in the bottom of the ninth inning to rally 18th-ranked Francis Marion University to a 2-1 win over Augusta University, Friday night (Feb. 24) in the Peach Belt Conference baseball opener for both squads.

The Patriots up their season mark to 12-1 with their third last at-bat win, while Augusta drops to 4-6.  Both teams will return to Cormell Field at Sparrow Stadium for game-two of their three-game series on Saturday at 2 p.m.

White's hit extended his modest hitting streak to five games, but he has now reached base safely in all 13 contests this year.  The knock also capped a two-out rally that made a tough-luck loser of Augusta right-hander Tristan Jones (2-2).

Jones had blanked the Patriots on six hits through eight innings.  In the ninth, junior designated hitter Tee DuBose led off with a flare single into shallow right field.  Pinch runner Austin Fox then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, but the next Patriot fouled out for the second out.  Fox then advanced to wild on a wild pitch and scored on the next offering when senior second baseman Antonio Pino laced a single to left field.

Freshman center fielder Connor Howell, who would not have batted if FMU had not tied the score, then bunted back to the pitcher and beat the throw to first for an infield single with Pino advancing to second.  Following a visit to the mound from the Jaguar coaching staff, White lined a 1-1 pitch from Jones into right center plating Pino with the winning tally.

FMU freshman lefty Garrett Wilson (3-0) earned the win in relief with 1.2 scoreless frames.  He worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth to keep the deficit at 1-0.  Patriot senior right-hander Chance DuCharme made his third quality start of at least seven innings in four starts.  He struck out a career-high 12 batters, walked two, and scattered five hits in 7.1 innings.

Francis Marion looked to take an early lead with runners on second and third and only one out in the bottom of the second frame.  However, Jones retired the next two Patriots on a strikeout a ground out to end the threat.

Augusta quickly responded with a single tally in the top of the third.  Second baseman Cody Lanford legged out a double up the middle, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt, and scored on an RBI single through the left side by shortstop Tyler Roberts.

Pino recorded his second straight three-hit game, while DuBose and FMU junior right fielder Zach Paquette both registered two hits.
