FLORENCE, SC- Limestone College pounded out 14 hits and took advantage of five Francis Marion University errors as the Saints beat the top-ranked Patriots 8-4 on Sunday afternoon (Feb. 5) and earned a split of their season-opening two-game series.

Francis Marion (1-1) will continue its six-game homestand when it entertains Newberry College on Wednesday at 3 p.m.

Preseason All-American Don Sandifer (0-1) was tagged with the loss for FMU.  He surrendered three runs, only one of which was earned, in three innings of work while striking out five.  Altogether, only half of the eight runs allowed were earned.

Senior righty Jeremy Peed (1-0), the first of six Saints to toe the rubber, registered the win.

Senior second baseman Brock McCallister paced the Patriots with three hits, a run scored, and one run batted in.  He is now 6-for-10 this season.  Three other Patriots collected two hits: sophomore third baseman Michael Wilson, senior centerfielder Buddy Sosnoskie, and junior first baseman Stephen Tarkenton.

Sophomore designated hitter Cooper Gunter led Limestone with a 4-for-4 day that included a double, one RBI, and three runs scored.  First baseman Jake Rierson was 3-for-4 with two RBIs, a double, and a run scored.

Francis Marion stranded 14 baserunners, including leaving the bases loaded in both the first and seventh innings.  Only twice, were the Patriots retired in order.

The Saints took the lead with a three-run third inning that feature three hits and two FMU miscues.  Rierson had an RBI double and left fielder Chad Balderman smacked a run-scoring triple to deep right center field.

Two more errors helped lead to two Limestone runs in the top of the fourth.  Trailing 5-0, FMU pushed across two runs in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI grounder by senior catcher Brian Paulhus and a run-scoring single by Wilson.  The Patriots were also aided by a pair of Limestone errors in that frame.

Still trailing 5-2, Francis Marion loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh with only one out, but Saint relievers Carter Page and Andrew Thompson got the next two batters out to extinguish the threat.

Limestone responded by scoring three times in the top of the eighth to lead 8-2.  FMU threatened in the bottom of the ninth when the first four batters reached base.  With the tying run in the on-deck circle and only one out, Limestone righty reliever Cameron Culp retired the next two batters to end the game.

Limestone is coached by Chico Lombardo, a 1979 FMU graduate and a Hall of Fame outfielder for the Patriots.
